ntvdm.exe
Sorry, can't help with your problem, but I'm posting under your heading about a problem I have with this same exe file.
In my case I'm attempting to perform an install of the Borland Database Engine that was compiled under Installshield. On my Vista test machine at work, this file installs fine. However, on my home test system I get an error (unrecoverable error with NTVDM.exe) and the file fails to install. I've tried running it in compatability mode without any luck. Both are clean installs of Vista. The only real difference between the two systems is that my work machine is a single proc Intel 3.0 cpu while my home system is a dual proc Intel 820 D. Not sure if it's the dual proc causing the problem or not. If anyone has a idea on how to get this to work, I would also appreciate some help.

Hi,
Some history would help, like what have you installed prior to this problem? Ntvdm, the Virtual dos machine, is used to run 16bit applications, so that is where you should concentrate on looking. Process Explorer from sysinternals.com may help you isolate it.

I thought I read somewhere that 16bit apps will not be supported in Vista

16-bit apps are not supported in any of the x64 operating systems, including Vista. I don't think that applies to x86 however.

x86 will support 16 bit apps. 64-bit won't.
